Adorn

This week I've been reading the book of John and I spotted something that drew me in, made me pause and take a step back. In John 8:29 Jesus says this:

"I am his [God's] messenger and he is always with me, for I only do that which delights his heart."

In the Aramaic it's translated like this:

"I only do what adorns [beautifies] him."

Be still my heart, I love this verbiage and the mental picture it presents! We have the opportunity to not only delight the heart of God but to also adorn him! Which means to add beauty, to make attractive.

This has me thinking though. We are either adoring him or we are not. The opposite of adorn is to mar, to disfigure and to make ugly. We don't have any real power to effect God in this way. He is perfect in every way and lacks nothing. However I think we do have the power to mar others perception of Him, and I believe that hurts his heart. Just think if we improved others perception of him? Think how people could be changed for the better if they knew God was good and could be trusted?

Here is some food for thought:

What if we spent even a fraction of the time we spent adorning and beautifying ourselves and adorn the One that really matters? What if we became aware of what we do everyday that either adorns or mars? Either way I believe it has eternal impact on us and those in our sphere of influence.
